Or do i need to get the D60?

My husband bought me the D60. I like it, if I can't have the D3.

I think for the price the D40 is a better deal unless you are planning to print billboard-sized prints. Money saved might be enough to buy a speedlight.

I've seen lots of incredible photos taken with that camera. Which ever way you go, I would leave a good chunk of change in the budget for some sort of overhead flash as already said. I have a D300 and my pics look like they were taken with a $100 point & shoot camera without adequate lighting. D40 is a great choice imo. The light sensors in all the Nikon D series cameras are top notch and will give you awsome color. If your main objective is great photos I don't think that the D60 will make you that much happier than a D40. Just a few more whistles & bells really.

i cant answer if you will be happy with it... but i know i will be happy with you having it ;)

D40 is a really good camera. I've been playing around with my XTi lately and I can safely say that its worth the extra couple bucks. Canon > Nikon any day of the week.

Well said! Maybe a little biased as i own an XTi as well...

happy is a qualitative word
but just to answer your question
a d40 is a nice DSLR to own and take pics
and as i am not a pro photographer and use it only to take photos of my fish this works really great

i myself am saving up to by the D40-ive done quite a bit of reseach on DSLR cameras and dont plan on printing poster size or anything-just aquatic photography and pics of family..

i think the D40 would be a better choice for the price.
