Before my big male managuense died he decided to slightly flay some of his tank mates one of which was my vieja mutt. He did quite a number on her tail. I was wondering was the damage to close to the base to allow for it to grow back normally or will it grow back. Any and all input appreciated

Super close. Probably not a good chance of it growing back, at least not normally. I hope it does. Clean water and good food are your best hope.

When the break is all the way into the caudal flesh, there is a good chance it won't grow back. I have a Paratilapia that has a similar split, been that way forever.
Although it could never be a show fish, its still one of my favorites.

I would say it might have a good chance of growing back. My male jag was the same as yours. It's taken 3-4 months and you can tell it's growing back slow. Like some people said. Good water changes will help a lot.

I rescued my Poleni with this forever damage too. Then I fixed that and it grew back to a complete tail...

for the mutt, I see a split with no fin ray.. Deep.. Only a week's time will give you the sign if it will ever heal back. In a week if you see no sign of healing then that's it..
