very shortly I will be setting up a 580 gallon display as well as a 6 90 gallon breeder system all in 1 unit from Das and a 120 grow out for rays. They will be connected to the same sump. So my question is If I want predestine water quality would you recommend that the sump be around 150 gallons or would I need something like a 300 gallon?
Also would over 10 percent daily water changes be necessary or 10 percent should suffice?

I would go with the 300 gallon sump.....my buddie has a 180 gallon sump for a 500 gallon system....but your talking 580 gallons PLUS an additional 540 gallons because of the 6 90 gallons......so a 1000+gallon system.....I would say bare minimum 300 gallon sump.....packed with bio media. Also I would recommend a drip system instead of 10% daily water changes. I would also impliment a drain system for just in case.

I agree and honestly I don't know anyone who doesn't run a drip over 300 gallons. Its very time consuming to do water changes on these large tanks plus your water will end up getting cold from the tap trying to fill it.

300 gallon system for 1240 gallon tank system is about bare minimum. I would filter the rays separately they produce a lot of waste.

If this was my fish room and needed them plumbed to one system I would get two of these pond totes and connect them to all of the tanks. It all depends on layout and if you have another room. http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/Fre...KKU3eWqhPERcKK2clm5kwOzzDHRKZBbXKcBoCbd3w_wcB

My father has roughly 1500 or so gallons to two big pond totes. Two tanks connected to it. Its saltwater but same concept he has live rock instead of media.

^ said it perfectly.....no way you would ever get away with anything less than a 300 gallon sump.....If it were mine I would also use multiple 300 gallon sumps made from those stock tank totes

I'm going to play a little devils advocate here, and say I don't think drip systems are all they are cracked up to be. If you drip 100 gallons per week on a 500 gal system, its only 1x20% water change per week, no matter how you look at it.
On my 1500 gal system, I found it advisable to to 3 x 30% water changes per week, and that is along with the use of lots of nitrate eating planted sumps. To maintain that type change, it would need to be more than a drip, more like a stream.
A tiny amount of water, though continuous, can easily be neutralized with metabolism byproducts such as fish urine, etc, and does not pack the same punch as the kind of buffering capacity of large scale water changes, and detritus removal.
