I would like to put lids on my tank to avoid splashes and to quiet the tank. I am concerned though that if I seal off the top completely that this will hamper oxygen exchange. Should the lids have holes? If, so how many and what size holes should there be? I have a bow front 36x22x30 with a 5" lip along the top of the tank.

the holes that are cut for your filters are sufficient.

it won't hamper gas exchange as it takes place directly at the air water interface.

so as long as you have some airspace above the water, you are fine.

I have my tanks sort of sealed as well to prevent evaporation and splashing fish

but the tank can 'breathe' because where I have put cutouts for my Aquaclear and rena filters, air can circulate through there.

There will be space between the lids and the water. My tank is drilled from the bottom though using a closed loop system so there are no other holes or cut-outs.

ok then make a cutout or put a small hole in your top.

nothing to worry about as the lids are never air tight. if the lids are touching the water than thats another problem

The typical lid isn't going to be airtight as there will always be gaps but I've found that my fish will end up breathing quite rapidly if I have the wet/dry filter off (during water changes) and the top covered. So during water changes I add a airstone. When the water change is done and I start up the wet/dry, I remove the airstone.

If the top isn't covered when the filter is off, they're fine. I guess when the cover is on, the air stagnates or there isn't enough mixing with the water.
