I have 2 males, both try to court my female JD with zero success. It's a 170G tank with other fish...in anything 55G or smaller I think they'd fight. I had them in a 40G rubbermaid with turtles and they fought in there.
In anything other than a large tank they will fight......... In a huge tank they will spar. In my 10'x4' they still seek each other out for some threat displays.

Yep. It's actually pretty cool to watch in my tank as they can easily get away from each other enough so that it never escalates. It's flaring, lip-locking, then they head back to their respective corners.
if it is just males or just females your fine given an appropriate amount of space. i have 3 very large 4.5"+ males in a 55 with barely any problem. once dominance is sorted out, there is no fighting, just a bit of chasing.
