So I have this pink convict that I have become attached to and I want to get her a male so they breed and I can have convict fry feeders.
I don't really like convicts, but I like her personality.
So I got her from somebody who had her with a male, and two jack dempseys. He was moving and giving away his tank/fish.
So the one jack was highly aggressive and kept everybody else hiding. I brought him and the male convict to a LFS (Couldn't tell the difference at the time lol). Then the female convict was constantly harassing the larger jack that she was with. If she saw him, she would attack him so I had to take him to the LFS.
Then I bought four convicts and put them with her in a 20g. They did okay for a while, she didn't like them and kept them hiding but if they were careful she wouldn't harm them.
Two of these convicts paired up and mercilessly beat her up. If they knew where she was they would bite her and rip up her fins so I had to move her out. They did not like her being in the tank. The other two convicts were fine as long as they didn't go near the nest. But eventually, they ended up with the female.
Now the other two pair up. I moved her out because I was leaving for ten days and I didn't want them hurting her when she goes to eat their fry (since she wasn't going to be fed for 10 days).
Now I tried introducing her back into the tank. She layed her own eggs and protected them and would not let anybody near her/the eggs. They all turned white and then she ate them. She did this one more time before I moved her on her own. Right before she was ready to lay eggs, I introduced that male again but she just beat him up then layed/ate her eggs.
My LFS has a large 4-5" male convict and I am thinking of getting him and putting them in a 20 gallon.
Before I continue to move the fish around, I want to feel like there is a possibility that she will successfully mate and the eggs will hatch without any bloodshed.
Is there something wrong with my convict, or have I just not found her the right mate yet?
