I need so input on this diy filter. First chamber is a settling chamber with heater. The pipes will be placed to create a swirl affect. Also, im using a external 2200gph pump. The pond does not have a bottom drain, using mid water pick ups.
Do i need a way to back wash the media? Trying to figure out how to do that.

Will 2200gph over flow 3inch drain pipes?

How much higher does the mechanical filter need to be from the bio filter to create enough gravity to move the water through.

You wont overflow the 3" at 2200 GPH. The mechanigal can be as high as you want. Increasing the head heigth will reduce the flow rate of your pump. The return will only flow what you are putting into it. Raising the first chamber higher than the second will not make it flow more. You can put bio media in both chambers, it doesn't care where its at. Having drains will allow you to remove any sediment that builds up in the chambers over time.
Take a look at the Bucket filters thread.
