i week ago I decided to buy two fan tail goldfish. I originally purchased a 1 gallon bowl starter kit for them. They aren't very big, probably about 21/2 inches not including their tails. They spent the night in the bowl, but I decided to go out and buy them a 10 gallon tank his morning after reading about them and learning how much space they need...I can't afford anything bigger right now and I don't have the space, but as they start to grow I will try my best to provide them with more room. I put new gravel in, filled it with fresh water, which I treated, hey have new plants and some ornaments are coming in the mail. I have continued to read about them and although they seem healthy and full of energy, I am worried about them since I never cycled their tank. I went out and just got them a filter which I started running. They like he bubbles a lot and keep chasing each other through them. I am just worried that something is going to happen to them because the tank was never cycled. I went and got them Jungle start zyme liquid, and I bought the Jungle complete water care kit tablets. I haven't added them yet since I read about them and some people say they aren't good products. Plus I am not sure if I can add them to the tank with my fish in there. Can anyone help? What are the odds that my fish will make it through the cycling process. I don't want to hurt them, and from what i have read they might be suffering through this. I really should have read about them before purchasing them, but it was very spontaneous.

thank you

Goldfish are relatively hardy and two should be able to survive a cycle, but if you want to speed things up, I'd try a product like stability (probably the jungle Zyme you mention, but I've never tried this particular brand) which should speed your cycle up within two weeks instead of 4-6 weeks.

Actually, goldfish are not as hardy as people believe. They are popular with new fish owners because goldfish are well known and the fancy ones are pretty. People think they are hardy because you can find them everywhere but probably 90% of fancy goldfish owners don't know how to keep them. If I were you, I would still keep them in the bowl until the tank is properly cycled. Keep them in the bowl and change the water in it about every 2 days since you don't have a filter and the ammonia will shoot up in such a small bowl. Goldfish are very, very, messy eaters and they will die in an un-cycled tank. Some people use goldfish feeders to cycle a tank because they are cheap and many will die until the tank is cycled. I hope your fish will live thru the cycle because the new, fresh tank will not have any beneficial bacteria to break down the waste. Change about 20% of the tank water every 2 days and hopefully the fish will live long enough until the tank is completely cycled. You can also use products to cycle the tank but I still will do water changes. The most important thing is to get a water test kit like the API Freshwater Master Kit. Remember, if you test all new water in the tank, the tests results will show that everything is fine but that's because there isn't any waste. If you are properly cycling the tank, the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates will shoot up. Don't worry. Continue doing water changes with whatever you are using to cycle the tank and when the tank is cycled, the Ammonia should be 0, Nitrites 0 and you should have some Nitrates but not too high. Sorry if I'm confusing you so let me know what you might not know what I'm saying. Good luck, Ed.
