Not trying to cross them, I was just wondering if I could have a breeding group of both species in the same tank without risking hybridization. I would think it's risky since full grown males look almost the same, and I've been hearing they may be closer related than previously thought (and N.fusco might be reclassified into Tyrannochromis) so that may be the gateway to some unwanted hybridization.

Logic would dictate "Probably". That being said, My male Fusco ignored all different female species of Haps (Red Empress & Tiawan Reef) in the tank & comcentrated solely on a female Fusco.

IMO there is risk, and relatively high. I would be concerned about aggression with the mix, but I would not save fry from the tank. Finally it would be difficult to ID the different females once the species are mixed, so you would lose the ability to sell or give away the females in the future.

I would say theres a pretty high chance. I believe I read somewhere awhile ago that the fusco could eventually be moved to tyranochromis since it seem to be more closely related to them than nimbochromis.

Definitely they are very similarly colored and shaped.

They look similarily familiar but that is where it ends. Fuscos are one of the most aggressive haps that I have ever owned. I had to rehome my 8" fusco because he was constantly terrorizing all the fish. I have had a couple of larger tyrannochromis and they are not even close to the aggressiveness of the fuscos. The tyrannochromis I have had were actually pretty mellow and not very aggressive. I also have a large Nimbochromis venustus and he is very aggressive. I've had to put him in another tank for weeks in order for him to mellow out.

Yep Fuscos are mean, nasty, and would generally be overaggressive, but u don't think they will hybridize in two breeding groups? I think the male Fusco would breed with the female Tyrannochromus or even vice versa

My male Fusco wanted nothing to do with the Female Fusco. I transferred her to a reserve tank.
Fuscos are very aggressive, but my Zebra Chilumba keeps mine in check.
