Added a phosphate sponge a couple of hours ago according to the directions. The water is now cloudy and the some of the fish in the main tank are breathing fast/heavy. My CLs are in the sump and seem to be swiming OK. I removed it but what should I do now.
Wait....see what happens in the morning
Water Change...
I have five total CLs in a 58 gal. heavily stocked tank. The W/D has a carbon pad in the sump does this need to come out as well. The other fish in the tank are looking better. My main concern is it going to stresss out the CLs to get worrried about.

Why did you had the phosphate sponge?

What color is the phosphate sponge? If it's white, then it uses aluminum oxide. This is supposed to heat up a little when it makes contact with the water. It is also reported to release aluminum into the water. This may/may not be harmful to the fish, since most water systems normally contain aluminum. If the phosphate sponge is red, then it uses iron oxide. This is supposed to not release any metals, such as iron into your tank. But then again, most water systems normally contain iron as well.

BTW, nice to see a local (sort of) here, at least from Illinois. I'm about an hour from you. I live in the Orland Park, Lemont area.

If it is approved for fresh water use, I think it would be fine to try. Just keep an eye on the fish. If you are using flake food, that can be a source of excess phosphates, you might want to try a more varied diet or smaller portions. Also, water changes are the easiest and cheapest way.

Everything/ body is good to go...

Phosphate sponge has to be removed after about 24-48 hours or it just leaches the phosphate right back out.

That thread was from months ago. Thanks for the heads up in case I use it again, which I won't be.

Oh.. it was a while ago anyways, and a lot of water changes later.
