I no longer have a monster tank :(, but something kewl just happened! :headbang2 My in-laws have had a very nice unused Koi pond in their front yard for years. My wife was talking to her Mother who was considering setting the Koi pond back up but she said they have no one to maintain it. My wife then volunteered me. I'm thinking that is kewl, they foot the bill and I get to enjoy keeping the fish as we are over at their house frequently. Then her mother said that she would pay me to maintain the tank!! :nilly: This is a deal! I have never kept Koi so I have some research to do , particularly about maintaining the temperature in an outdoor pond in Vegas. I am excited to fuel my fish hobby and get paid to do it!

Cool. My cousin had a koi pond but they all died because he's not exactly a "fish expert" but he did find a bullfrog tad poll in there that I have no idea how it got there.

Nice of her to offered but don't do it. Mixing family with business is not good. Might be problems later. Unless your just doing out of your heart and not taking the money. I raise koi fishes. Las Vegas and Central California is almost the same temperature. Just that Las Vegas and get way hotter only. Having shade for your pond will help. Anyway once you get the pond up they is not much maintenance left. Starting it up is the hard part.

If winter water temps drop below 70F for awhile tropical fish won't make it. Maybe some of the really hardy ones could maybe survive. But I know the temps will get lower than that so I am certain tropicals won't survive. Hey maybe you should try to get some native fish, koi are kinda boring and played out. Everyone has Koi ponds. How big is the pond? How deep? Any fish you keep they are gonna need a shady spot.
