Will Pothos plants grow if you put them completely under water?

I want to buy some plants to help reduce nitrates. Some people have recommended Pothos plants put into a HOB filter, but my acrylic tank doesn't have openings to put an HOB on it. Can I just put the Pothos completely under water and still have it grow or do the leaves need to be outside of the water?

The plant will die underwater after a couple of weeks. If you want to use Pothos, find a way to keep the roots in the water while the rest stays above the water line.

You only need a small opening to get the stem into the water. It will then sprout roots.
