I recently decided to add some rive cane, from a nearby stream, to my 55 gal modestly stocked cichlid tank. It would be nice to know of any thoughts that anyone has regarding whether or not this would potentially be harmful in anyway to the fish or if the river can would just outright die.

The river cane has been in the aquarium for about a day now and the only affect that it has had on the aquarium is that it lowered the ph moderately (from 7.8 to about 7.5). Now I do know that the river can will eventually rot and die, but my parents have had lucky bamboo completely submerged for about a year now in a tank and it is still doing pretty well. So my thoughts were that I might get some decent amount of time out of it before it begins to wither.

Does anyone know of a reason not to do this?
