Just wondering if you sqeeze a sponge filter inside of your tank will it kill your bacteria?

It may dislodge some, but I don't think normal cleaning will effect the bacteria all too much.

It'd be better to squeeze it out to get any gunk off while losing some bacteria to just have a clogged sponge

As long as you use the aquarium water that it came out of, you will not hurt the bio

If u squeeze it in chlorinated water, make sure u rinse the heck out of it. You can try the following sterilization methods:
Boiling
Leaving out in the sun
Cleaning with a mild detergent and rinsing very well to prevent the mild detergent from affecting the quality of the water inside ur fish tank

GL!!

And the award for worse advice goes to..^

Fat daddy, read up on biofiltration, and try to avoid giving advice like that lol

Generally, I don't squeeze sponge media. I shake it. Otherwise you compromise its structure. Plus shaking it around dislodges more detritus. Squeezing it keeps it in.

Bacteria have the properties of glue. You'd lose the weak and dead bacteria ,and detritus. The healthy one will remain. For the same reason for example K1 media is so robust because it is subjected to constant "cleaning". Does the bacteria fall of the media? No. Having dirty media promotes the wrong type of bacteria as well.
