I'm in the process of converting a 10 ft diameter above-ground pool into a pond for my silver arowana, redtail catfish, florida gar, and peacock bass. The pond is in my garage, and I have two filters hooked up to it (I modded the pool filter and I hooked up a Filstar XP large, but it's still not nearly enough so I will probably make my own system or purchase an FX6 and see how it goes). I was wondering how I should heat this enclosure. For the purpose of cleaning, I plan to leave it bare-bottom. I was going to buy two 500 watt submersible heaters, but I wasn't sure if that would burn the liner? If it would, how can I prevent that? I don't think I can afford to buy a fancier heating system.

I'm not sure if they do burn through pools liners as ive never tried it personally (not git the space :( ) but plenty of members have the answer on here , anyone ????
What if you cut sections of plastic pipe (drain pipe) with a series of slots cut out of it for the heat to escape , put the heaters in those and they won't come into direct contact with the liner

Even if it doesn't burn through initially, I can't imagine this being good long term for the liner. Throw it in the sump if that's what's you're using. If it has to go into the pool itself enclose the heater(s) in capped pvc pipes. Use large diameter like 4" and just drill a ton of large holes to allow the heat to radiate out. Make sure you cap with pvc end caps so there's little to no chance of the heater coming out from your fish bumping into it.

I place the heaters in my pool on something such a a tile, or non-meltable surface, and wedge them between a couple rocks, or other solid objects so they don't get moved.

Why would anyone want to live with that kind of doubt always in the back of their mind? Put heater guards on the heaters and be done with it and the worry. The guards will reduce the risk of liner degradation and prevent heater burns to your fish.
