I'll be switching tanks and going from gravel to sand. Everything else will be moved. I have a few pieces of rocks and a small driftwood. I can stick with my old substrate if this is a not a good idea. I just thought that this is the best time to switch substrates.

no its not, but if you do, i would advice you to gradually take out the gravel over the course of a week or so. you dont want to take it all at once and shock the tank because of the loss in bb colonies.

try not the disturb the old substrate. if you want to do it quick and clean. i would use a garden hose as a vaccum. use it to suck out the old substrate, its simple and clean. and its pretty much a water change. repeat till its all out then slowly add new substrate.

But I'm switching tanks also moving everything except the substrate. In response to AFM post #2, what if I put some sand in a mesh bag and drop it in the tank and let it seed for a week or 2 is that ok?

When I switched from gravel to sand I just took all the fish and decor out of the tank and did the swap and then monitored my water parameters for two weeks. No spikes or swings and everything went smoothly.

You can make the switch. You filters will have bio. you can also do it all at once.

What I did was, I used my sisters old stockings and put all the gravel there and placed it in the corner of tank and kept it there for about 3 weeks. Make sure you wash the stocking before you use it
