hey guys, just had a question, will taking water from a running tank and putting aobut half into a new tank help the cycle process?

No. Bacteria is not in the water. Sorry. You can take the sponge from the filter in the cycled tank and squeeze it into the new filter or take some bio media from the old and mix it with the new. That will help the process.

You can also use the rocks at the bottom of the tank+ the water from your existing tank and you can speed up the cycle process. I was able to cycle my tank in about 1 week. Using an already cycled filter is also a great way to help get your tank going.

if using some bio-media along with the old tank water i think the water would help. i'm doing something similar this weekend. upgrading my 75 to a 125. i'm taking everything from the old tank, filter media, substrate, decor etc... taking all the 75 gallons from the old tank and adding a fresh 50 gallons. my thought is that it would be like doing a 40% water change and i could avoid any mini-cycles

oh ok thanx guys.im getting some africans cichlids in a 55 gal.i heard they r hardy fish.will thye be able to be put in after 1 week of a tank running?

Yes adding water from an established tank will help. Although the nitrifying bacteria is predominantly sessile, bacteria is everywhere so the old water will have a lot of beneficial bacteria in various stages of reproduction/death present. Adding established substrate and established filter media into your filter will also reduce the biological cycle establishment time. I recommend you clean out a dirty filter and empty the collected effluent into your new tank. Although it makes your new tank dirty for a day, the substrate, ornaments, glass etc AND new filter will be full of bacterium.

I do this all the time and I don't cycle. I take water from other tanks add an established filter top off with tap water and add fish the key is to use an established filter

also if you're not sure, you can use some feeder shrimp to help cycle the tank.

I don't like to use live fish to cycle my tanks, and the shrimp that are alive in the tank serve as food for the fish.
