will tanins help relieve stress from fishes? assuming they are used to normal water then introduce a driftwood releasing tanins into water? assuming they are all soft water species?

Maybe. I know when I got rid of my t5's and let the driftwood stain the water in my 60 gallon, my fish all responded well... Angel, ram, tetras and small plecos.... Typical chill SA blackwater tank. Fish seem to really like the subdued feel of the tank.

thanks a lot. well what if the fish were stressed due to water change?

I haven't ever tried it but have read that the micronutrients released from the driftwood will help reduce stress, I use this stuff that comes in a bottle and its called amazon extract and have noticed that the fish do seem calmer and are actually show more color

depends on the kind of fish. If they originate from amazon basin or place where there is low light level, then perharps.
