had a overflow problem and my bristle board on the back of my tank warped ,so i'm painting it this time question is will the fumes from a flat paint rolled on get onto the surface of the water and would this be enough to be toxic to the fish?

Any fumes in the air is gonna get into the water.Keep the area well ventilated for a few days

Turn off anything that pumps or injects air into your aquarium. (air pump , protien skimmer, etc..) I don't feel good about the "Saran wrap" idea, that could stop gas exchange from happening. Cover your tank (and sump if you have a wet / dry) with a damp towel while painting and ventilate the room real well. Perhaps a water change and activated carbon relacement afterwards would be a good idea to be safe.

I agree with ornatapinnis...stop air intake, ventilate the room as much as you can. I do not think although that you need to cover the tank. Air will get through anyways, and if using saran wrap you are looking for trouble. Fish need oxygen, saran wrap will prevent oxygen from reaching the water surface...

Key is ventilation, the faster the fumes are gone the better.

there are now water based paints that are ideal for this application and you can drink the stuff if you really wanted to. look for those. im not sure about america but a lot of the toxic paints that used to be sold here were banned a long time ago. you could also consider a rubberised masonanry paint they are also water based and would stop any dampness reaching any wood.

We had our entrie place painted three months ago... The painters covered one of my tank with the drop plastic they use but it wasn't air tight or anything like that. I was scared the fumes would hurt the fish. I never saw any signs of stress at all. They were in the house for 3-4 days painting all day. I think you will be ok.
