Will this cycling jumpstart idea work?

I'm planning on setting up a 10 gallon this summer and had an idea on how to speed up the cycling. I currently have an Eclipse System 6 that's fairly well established and I was wondering if placing a bio-wheel at the surface will collect BB for the 10 gallon's filter. Would this work?

what if you bought a filter that uses the same size bio-wheel and just swap out the loaded one in the new system and put the new wheel in your old filter but make sure you leave some of the cartridge media in there don't wanna remove all of it......but i don't see why it wouldn't work. it may just keep the tank from crashing until your new one gets established......i dont know if it would spread to the new filter system

That was another idea I had. Hopefully it won't remove too much of the bacteria. I'll probably do the transfer after the cartridge has been installed for 2 weeks.

I don't see a problem with this at all. I always use an already established filter (or media) on newly setup tanks. After about 2 weeks, I remove the established filter and constanly check the water parameters to ensure the new filter is cycled and it usually is.

i swap out bio wheels all the time for new tank setups, and alot of the time i also just let extra bio-wheels float around incase i need to use em later.

any time i need to set up my 10g fast i just grab a wheel out of one of my running filters and throw it in the 10g filter, instant cycle.

Yeah, just float the wheel then add it to another tank.

Agreed ive done the bio wheel thing for many tanks. Just float a new wheel in an established tank for around 2 weeks and use it in the new tank.
