My aquarium is 150 x 50 x 50 cm (sorry, don't know how much that is in inches). I don't have a stand yet so I was looking around for some ideas. And I came up with the following.

Cinderblocks on the corners and in the middle untill I reach an appropriate height. But cinderblocks don't fit well in my interior so I would cover or hide them with wooden front en sidepanels. Maybe nail the panels together to make some sort of frame. I will use a sturdy, thick kind of wood for the top panel on which the aqurium will rest. The actual overall weight will rest on the cinderblocks.

And of course a door so I can access my pump.

Hope you get the idea what I mean. But will this work or do I have to take other matters in account? I think this will be a relatively cheap solution... Thanks in advance for the input :D

It would probubly work...in a sort of...ghetto looking manor...Wood stands are a lot more secure and not all that much more expencive...still if thats all you can do then try tacking a room matching cloth under the tank to the plywood base. that would probubly look a lot nicer than wood panneling leaning against the blocks.

Plywood base.... Thanks I forgot that. I should have mentioned that my interiour is very basic, simple, clean, all furniture have rectangular shapes en sharp edges/corners. The panneling wouldn't lean against the blocks, but I would nail the panels together to form a sort of frame. A basic, simple, clean and rectangular frame :)

My main concerne is that the cinderblocks can hold the weight and is stable enough. Because I don't want to come home one day to find out that the contents of my aquarium is all over my living room floor :)

Thanks for your thoughts...

they can hold the weight but I seriously question thier stability. One cracked block out of the bunch and you have a disaster...
You have to understand that I live in earthquake country...We don't even put up tall shelves without tacking them to the wall and all of our appliances are anchored as well. I have a hard time even imagining a stack of loose blocks holding up a shelf let alone one of my aquariums but I do see it done quite frequantly. 2 4"x4" posts a handful of 2"x6" boards....glue...screws and the panneling you mentioned plus a sheet of 3/4" plywood and an afternoon and you have a stand that will last a lifetime (if properly sealed of course) and that will look great as well.

oops....I just noticed your other post....Welcome to MFK....

Finally, here are some pics of my DIY-project. So far, I made a lighthood (can someone please tell me the right word in English?) and a stand. I still have to sandpaper them and then apply some paint (I think I will paint it black). But that's something for next weekend.

The quality of the pics are &$@*#*&% but I had to make them with my webcam. I still haven't got a new camera :(

I should have sticked to a plan or a blueprint but I was too lazy. So I just started building and I would see where it all would end.

The foundation, the cinderblocks:

The front- and sidepanels nailed together to form a frame that goes over the cinderblocks:

The frame and the foundation combined:

And finally the whole stand. I just slide a panel between the cinderblocks and the bottom of the frontpanel. The result is a very basic and clean stand that fits perfectly in my interiour:

The lighthood. I still have to put in the TL-lights. I already painted part of the top black, only a test-paintjob:

And closing with the stand, the tank and the lighthood:

I will put more pics after the stand and the lighthood are painted black :) Hopefully not with the webcam...

Hey that's odd. A minut ago I saw the pics and now they're gone. What happened???

I think I know what the cause is. I uploaded the pics to my hosting-provider but I forgot that I've disabled deep-linking. I've uploaded the pics to another hosting-provider where deep-linking is possible. I'll give it another shot then :)

Allrighty then. It's almost finished... I'm just not happy with the lighthood so I will start over with that. But everything else is finished now. Here are the pics, hope you like them. And if you have any other ideas or advice please share :)
