Ok I finally got permission from the parental units to use a cabinet in the garage for fish tanks(next step half the garage =3). So now I can start a small breeding project:D. I want to use some 40gallon tubs 33x20x14h and I was thinking of a rack something like this. It will either have 6 40 gal tubs and the parents will be located outside the cabinet or 4 40gallon tubs and a 55 on top and it will be made of 2x4 1"ply and cinder blocks.

My sketchup skills aren't the best but it should be a good enough idea. The part I'm worried about most is the little bit of overhang on each side? Will that cause problems?

Looks really high and unstable, especially if an earthquake or something hits.

earthquake?
I can see standing out in the front yard looking at a pile if ruble that use to be my house and thinking "dang, I should of only went two tiers high with those aquariums............"

is the "or something" like a meteor?

i would think the plywood would be enough.dont think you need the 2x4 sthis would help lower the height.and i wouldnt have tanks directly on the floor.the cement will suck any heat out of them.and possably think about insulating the bottom and atleast 3 sides.to help conserve heat

They wont be on the floor, this is going into a cabinet the bottom tanks will be on the bottom of the cabinet about 6in off ground level. As for stability the sides will be up against the sides off the cabinet. And I'm in Colorado I think an earthquake is the least of my worries

I don't know if the existing cabinet would be able to take the weight of the stand design.
Any chance of posting a pic of the cabinet?

No camera atm. And to be honest I'm not sure what the bottom of it looks like. Ill have to get a chance to look under it at some point, If anything it will just need a little extra support on the bottom.
