I just finished (or almost) the wet/dry filtration system on my 400 gallon tank. I have a Pondmaster 1200 gph pump for the return. My question is, I have 2 ball valves in line on the return lines(1 on each line)that are about 1/3-3/8 of the way closed. Will this put too much strain/pressure on the pump and harm it?

I plan on running a third overflow line sometime in the next week to help eliminate the issue.

I doubt it will hurt it short term. It's just like having the pump push water higher up.

I wouldnt want to for long term, but I'd do it for a few weeks withough worry.

Cool. THanks for the fast reply. I hope to have the 3rd overflow line plumbed by next weekend.

:iagree: with rallysman, no short term probs at that level.

If it was long term I'd shunt the excess back to the sump.

Tho it's not supposed to hurt magnetic drive type pumps, it does, in most cases, raise the temp of the pump body. It may not be enough to harm the pump, but if it's submerged it may heat up your water when you don't want it.

Hurry up with pix.

couple of quick pix:

I built my filter setup into my tank's stand using plywood and a pond liner. The sump is right about 75 gallons. The filter basket contains floss type material up top, followed by about 6 gallons worth of pot scrubbies on top of 5 gallons of Bio balls.
Please forgive me as I still need to aquascape and trim off some excess on the pond liner for the filter.

Will post up some pics of the inhabitants in the photo lounge.

Oh... Way too clean of a garage... I couldn't show my wife the pix of your tank because of it. :D

LOL, you can see the only clean part of it in the pic, mine ain't the cleanest either:grinno:

A clean garage is a sign of a sick mind.:D

Thanks for sharing the pics. I wouldn't worry about trying to make the sump or equip. pretty. That is what the stand doors are for. Nice set up by the way.

Nice work!! I cant wait to see it stocked:)

these days most pumps are designed to take any pressure at the output without damaging the motor

however, when flow is restricted flow on the intake thats when you will damage or burn out the motor.

you should be A-ok.
