I've been thinking for a while about buying a nice sized Rubbermaid tote to start raising some fish for feeders in (not exactly sure what yet, but I'm thinking either guppies, mollies, convicts or killies. Anyway, a couple of days ago while laying in bed, I got to thinking about an idea I could possibly use, but there's a couple point's I'm stuck on.
I'm sure some of you have heard of/seen the open-bottom tanks on youtube. Well, what I was thinking is this. Say I buy a 50-gal or so rubbermaid tote. I also have a 5 and a 15 gallon tank just sitting in my closet doing nothing. Now, my idea is to fill the 50-gal tote with water, and then take the 5/15gal and place it inside the tote, allowing it to fill with water. Then, turn the 5/15gal upside down and slowly raise it out of the water, which due to the suction (would it be suction causing it? lol), would keep the water inside the 5/15 gal until it leaves the surface of the water. Now, I was thinking to raise it to the point where there is 1-2" of the tank still in the water, and then to put something (say, a couple of 2x4s for example, though I doubt they're safe to be in the water with fish) underneath the 5/15gal to hold it in that position. What this would do is creating a "viewing-space" of sorts for the fish, so I can see that they're healthy and just kinda admire them at the same time.
Think of it in small scale, replacing the tote with a bucket of water and the 5/15gal with a cup.
Now, my questions to everyone are these;
1 - What could I use to hold the 5/15gal in place once it's been raised? I've though of stacking rocks, but I'd like to hear of any other ideas to keeping it raised.
2 - Do you think this idea will work?
3 - Which fish, in your opinion, would be the best to breed for feeder purposes. I'd be hoping for one which breeds frequently, has large batches, and grows quick enough to be a size-able meal. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this, and possibly responding with some advice.
EDIT: Forgot to add the very quick sketch of my idea. Forgive the bad artwork, haha.
