I used google's Isketch to design myself a nice looking stand for my 40 br.

The two wooden columns will be 2 1/4" in diameter. The rest of the wood will be 1" plywood or something like that. I may add some 2x4 supports inside the compartment.

Does this design seem like it would be strong enough to hold up a 40g breeder? Right now I have a 29g sitting on my dresser which is 1" plywood and there are two tall 1" plywood sheets on the sides and a brace on the back. Nothing more.

What kind of wood should I use for the columns?

Will the stand hold up the tank good enough?

Also, I am trying to decide between black paint, and black stain. Give me some opinions on those.

I would say it possible to hold the tank. Cause you are framing the cabinet with 2x4. the only thing that wouls scare me is that the 2 wooden poles not being strong enough but that might depend on the height of the stand.

It should be fine. Try finding large dowel rod. You might have a hard time finding something that is big enough. You might end up having to run a board across a lathe in order to get something round like that. You could also look at steel tubing.

I was thinking of steel tubing, but that would be harder to screw in without the right tools and it could dent and collapse.

Some details I forgot, stand is 31 1/2" from the bottom of the first board to where the tank sits. The large board on the back is 1/2" from the edge of the top and bottom boards. Also, the board is 1" bigger all the way around then the tank, so each side comes out 1/2" past the tank frame.

The steel tubing would handle more than an equivalent piece of wood. You would be better off having the steel tubing.

I would just cut a circular notch in the top and bottom boards to set the tubing in. Once the stand is put together, the top and bottom boards will hold the tubing in place.

Na.. dont use steel tubing. Just use pre turned table legs. You can get them at HD or Lowes. Find the leg that you want to use and adjust the height of the stand accordingly. The plans look as tho it could be a very nice piece of furnature. Plenty strong, and then just make the center column of 3/4" plywood. No need for 2x4 on this. You are just looking at 300# at the most.

IMO that is how I would do it.

He makes a valid point with the plywood.
