Hi guys,
I plan to get 2 14x8x8s (inch) and i have designed this stand, i plan to make it out of 1x1 birch, using 3" wood screws, and i would like to know the following:
1 - will 1 x 1 be strong enough for 2 5gal tanks?
2 - Is the way the wood is setout the strongest position?
3 - will i need some kind of wood under the tank, or is it ok just on the edge wood?
4 - what wood do you think i should cover the whole thing in?

Thanks

The 1 x 1's should be strong enough. Especially since you're doubling them at the corners. I can't tell if there's a center brace on each shelf. It's not really needed if these are glass tanks. But, if these are thin-walled acrylic tanks, a center brace will prevent any bowing out.
The sides and front can be any veneer or finish you like. For the back, I would use any plain piece of plywood since this side will be out of view.
All in all, the stand should have no problem holding 80 pounds of tanks/water. (the dimensions come out to less than 4 gals per tank)

Ok thanks, yes they are all glass tanks, and there is no centre brace. Should i use MDF or Plywood for the sides and front? Thanks again

Thanks danny, as soon as i even start to build it ill post pics, pics, pics dont worry :)

I started to build something similar for a spare tank. I ran into one big problem. 1 x 1 boards not only warp like a mother but twist really bad as they dry. The Home Depots of the world get a lot of rather green wood in for building. You are better off buying a few better grade 2x4's in my opinion.

I was also thinking of 2 x 4s, but then i thought 1x1s would hold so i would use them as they are cheapers, but i guess ill use 2x4s again lol thanks

im putting some platies in one (feeders), and the other is a grow out for a small oscar (from 1.5" -3") then it will be a quarentien tank :)
