i got a 180g tank. I got a few 7x18" filter socks and a mount for it but it won't fit my sump. I was thinking of setting up a 29 or 37g aquarium as a home made sump. Just wondering if this will work. like i said i got a 7x18 sock for mechanical media, filter floss from a cpr194 (up to 200g) and 6g of 2" bio ball (for up to 140g). would the bio media work as well if they are submerged like this?I really want find a way to use the filter sock. my sump worn't work and i cant afford a new one. will this work?

well.. yer going to need a pump.. and some plumbing... other than that.. yeah thats about it... the diy section has about 8million sump designs to give you some ideas on how to lay stuff out...

generaly speaking though... its a sump.. not rocket surgery...

if yer on a budget you can get like way more "media" using scrubbies insted of bioballs for a lot less money

Look into getting a rubber maid style storage tub at wal mart / biglots etc. Cheap and effective sumps. Pack it full of scrubbies. As stated above DIY section has a ton o plans and they all work. IMO easier is better.

I would add atleast one baffle at the other end and have it sectioned off for a return pump space. If you do not make water flow thru all the bio media then you are not using all the bio media.

you mean like this?

Ya , if you are using a external pump for return.

I was looking through some of the japanese style sump threads and got an idea for using a UGF under the media and returning the water through the bubble tubes. do you think the bio media will get suffecient water flow with the water overflowing from the sock chamber to the bio media chamber?

If you do that I would add a drip plate over the media to even the flow out all the way across.

that drip plate would be the best route to go with the latest diagram you drew. also great skills with paint shop.(i get so mad when trying to make stuff on that program:swear:)

whats the best adhesive for bonding acrylic pieces to the glass tank to hold the drip plate. I have an acrylic sump with acrylic strips that hold the drip plate up. The new sump will be glass. I have tried to bond acrylic strips to a 55g glass tank with silicone but the weight of the water caused the silicone to fail. Could it be that i didn't clean the glass properly before bonding the strips or was it the silicone? Is there a waterproof superglue type adhesive that would be good for bonding acrylic to glass?
