Just wanted to get your guys opinion on my sump idea.

I want to get a 4x1x1 or something similar and have it standing vertically. I also want the top of the sump to be level with the top of the tank so that in the unfortunate event of pump failure there would be no water spilliage as the sump and the tank would level out.

Done a rough design on Solidworks (the tray at the top would have holes drilled as a drip plate.)

Its just something I thought of tonight and would like to have a try if it would work.

not a sump expert but it looks good to me btw where does the all the media go>?

In the big space below the drip plate

i see... you should another shelf(the part i added on) so the media will be more accessible when your cleaning it and so that smaller area doesnt get clogged faster than the top :D just a thought though.

Yeah i would probabaly have a sheet of egg crate or something similar to stop media falling down into the compartment below

i like the space saving of having it upright, heaps of videos on you tube about diy sumps to get good ideas about how to place your biomedia ,sponges, trays ect .

Design looks good. I would mention that this would qualify as a wet/dry, not a sump. Your media will not be submerged in this case. But that is trivial at best.

The only thing I caution you is the water level. You will have to keep the water level fairly low. Just make sure that it it big enough to support any power outages that you may have. You might go a bit higher with the second wall. This will allow the water level to be a bit higher.

If the top of the tanks were level so that the water levels in the "wet/dry tower" and the main tank could become the same in the event of failure, would this solve the power outage problem?
