Where the gators are
Hey so i came up with this idea last night. And this is what my plan is. Im setting up a 90 gal SW tank and im useing a 45 gallon as a sump. Here is a blueprint of what i want to do. Sorry if it crappy looking i was drunk when i did it. HAHA

Ditch the straws. The idea in SW is to avoid letting the nitrites go to nitrates. Nitrites are not toxic in SW and a tank can be quite happy with insane levels. Nitrates are algae fertilizer. The completion of the nitrogen cycle takes place with the live rock and live sand. The idea is to keep the concentration of nitrate production at the source of the anaerobic bacteria (better feeding them and better nitrate consumption). If the nitrate source is away from the anaerobic bacteria, then the whole tank is exposed to all of the nitrates before the anaerobic bacteria get a chance at it.

Secondly, make baffles that are the same material as the sump. If it is glass, use glass baffles; if it is acrylic, make them from acrylic. For the last compartment (just before the pump), you'll want a bubble trap.

So basically there is no BB in a salt tank?

Sorry but i cant really understand what ur trying to say. Hahaha Also why wouldnt the eggcrate idea work? Instead of trying to get glass that is cut to the right size, this is just easy and the water can just pass through.

How about this? I mean is this a good basic idea of what i need?

Give it a shot. It does sound easier and cheaper. If you have to redo it, it won't be too hard. FWIW, I don't buy the glass that I use in my projects. When I have the opportunity to get some for free, I pick it up and store it for later. It stores nicely behind book cases and dressers. Buy a cutting kit at HD or Lowes and practice on some scraps (broken pieces).

Yes, that's good but move the bubble trap to the other side. You may want to have a compartment for a skimmer.

You might want to switch your baffles: Put the one at the end at the beginning and then go under-over-under before the return pump. That way, it should prevent any microbubbles returning to the tank.

Alright sweet. I have a few 29s layin around that i could use as baffels. Just me and cutting glass isnt a good combo hahaha. Tanks been put on hold now have to build a stand and dont have the time. But ill get to work on the sump so everything is ready.

And yeah ill see how it goes then later on if needed ill get a skimmer. My boss keeps tellin me i dont need one but this is my first SW tank so gonna take this on slow so i get it all right.

Use one of the 29s as a concept tank/grow out. Look for a 15g long to use as a sump.

I have a 30g with a 10g sump that I used to try out several concepts. It is plumbed silent, has an ATS (algae turf scrubber) (skimmerless), LED lighting, deep sand bed, and now corals. It has been going for over two years and I have learned a lot by having it. I'm putting together a 150g reef tank with the knowledge that I have gained.
