Will this work for heating?

Why not just use dirt as substrate? Its cheap, and better for digging. What are the dimensions? Also, substrate needs to be deeper. I would say the heat is fine, but i would need to know how far his hot spot is going to be from the light.

Yes you could. I wouldn't want to do less than a foot. As for heating, You really need to get the lights and experiment. Buy a temp gun, and use that to see how the temperatures are doing.
