I’m considering staring a Red Texas project but wondering if I’m out of my depth for what I have. I have a 75, 15 and 10 gallon tank. I’d get a blood parrot and carpintis for the 75 gallon (buy them a 3-4’’) , and attempt to keep any eventual fry with the parents for as long as they would allow. I’d use the 10 or 15 gallon for something to eat fry for the culling process. The remaining tank can be extra space for maybe growing a nice one up for a short while.
I’m not in it to make money, just a hobby. I think Red Texas are beautiful fish and understand it takes lots and lots of time to get right. Plus I have to get lucky with sexing small fish. I’m in no hurry.

Overarchingly, yes sounds like it would work.

You may just have more difficulties using a blood parrot (due to fertility issues) compared to say a red devil or similar though.
IIRC female blood parrots don't have problems with fertility, just males sometimes.

I can't remember which way it was, but I always thought one sex was almost always infertile, while the other was not always, but still like around 50%. I could be wrong here though, but yeah if female bps don't have an issue that'd work. Just means you'd definitely have to get a male green texas and a female bp then.

Female BP are usually fertile. Using a red devil or midas is always a bad choice.
I don't think anything that will eat 1-2" culls will fit in a ten gallon tank. You never cull before 1" so I don't know what you are thinking here. I just freeze culls and feed them to snakes and chickens. You will need the 75 gallon for the parents, you'll need at least another 75 gallon for the fry.

Unless your goal is eventual line breeding I would say just buy a Red Texas. You may not even end up with a single decent fish in the first generation cross.

Can I ask why a red devil or midas is a bad choice? Genuinely curious. Is it an issue of aggression?

Jeeze buddy…I’ve never done this part before, no need to be rude. Im trying to do my due diligence in asking questions like this before making a decision to give it a shot or not. Thank you for your response.

The fry will all inherit the longer face shape of red devil or midas. Faders will likely lose iridescence of pearls as well.
