ok, so i am on vacation for a day or two, and want to put together my first diy filtration system....

here is my idea, will it work?

i guess it is considered a wet/dry as long as the media never gets fully submerged by too much inflow into the system?

my basic questions:

1) intake from tank will either be powered by python suction or a powerhead - i am leaning towards powerhead because i want to use an internal filter attachment on the powerhead to pre-filter? is this correct?

2) inside my "box" (which will probably me made from plastics of some sort or potentially glass) - the half that has the media needs to be elevated so that water can flow out from under it and onto the other side of the box (elevate probably with some sort of egg crate or metal/plastic grid material).. is this correct?

3) getting water back to the tank --- powerhead

i am confused because this sounds kind of too easy? i obviously need to make sure the intake vs return is equal or else i am gonna have some spilling going on....but other than that, am i on the right track here?

other than that looks good.Need to search the site for diy overflows or drill the tank.and a way to prevent backsiphon if the power goes off. good luck

:nono: no, this will not work. First problem, most powerheads are not made to pump water up (they call this "head") you will need a more powerful pump that can push water up th 3-4 feet from the sump to the top of the tank.
second problem (and biggest problem): you should not (can not) use a pump of any kind, to pump water to the wet/dry. You could never match the input to the one pump to the output of the other. The result is one will win, and one will lose and no matter what ----you will lose ----cleaning up water from the tank overflowing or the sump overflowing. You will need an over flow of some type. You can do a search on this subject. some choices: weir, "u" pipe or drill the tank.

Try some searches on the topic of wet/dry sumps.
