I'm planning to build a custom DIY tank in the slot provided. This is the very early on in the thinking process and I just want to know if it will work. I plan to build it to match each corner and take up most of the space (basically, a pentagon to fill in the space. Give me some ideas? I'm trying to go cheap and easy, since it is my first DIY tank. I was thinking all plywood with plexiglass front, but im not sure.

are you putting the tanks in the space you showed cause you will have to figure out the load rating on the shelves. the company that builds those would know or you could try to support the shelf more but the material the sheves are made of are usully just mdf and will bow significantly and cause alot of stress on the tank

i totally agree...from the looks of it, it doesnt seem like that shelf would be able to take the long term (or short term) stress of having a tank on there, i would try to reinforce that shelf with more support before you start on your tank.

I would be very worried about the strength of that shelf especially in front where it is not supported.

Any sitting water will eventually soak through that laminate into the particle board and ruin the wood (also will immediately soak into any scratch or something in the wood.

Not saying you could not get it to work, but personally think if you were to do it I would build a cheap 2 x 4 stand underneath to support the shelf. Or you could cut out the shelf and put a stand in the corner, but then probably would have to do something to supporting the desk since that would probably affect the integrity.

Redo the cardboard backings with 1/4" plywood(or plywood overtop them)

resupport underneath as everyone else states,

You could cut a piece of 1/2" or 1" plywood for under your tank then get some waterproofing materials for it. The fiberboard can still get wet though....

Staple up a black piece of material to the bottom portion of that section of the desk to hide your framework under there, make good fish supplies storage also.

After you've taken all the advice on retrofitting the desk to hold about 250 lbs, you should be able to make a 25g to fit.

I'd suggest doing all glass and following the two back sides (90*) in the desk and doing the front as 3 separate panes of glass. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207726

Or go "L" shaped (much easier), but so boring (yawn) :D.

Or put the computer back and run a screen saver :screwy:

Okay, I've put some thought into this and I want to try and put either a 20 long or a regular 25 tank in that shelf space, but I was wondering if you think I should put a couple wooden support beams underneath in order to support the extra weight. I'm trying to go small so that I have a better chance of the table holding up. What do you guys think?

I would definitely add support any where I could
