Will this work to be able to be turned into a FBF? It looked like one to be, so I thought I could take the sponges out and just fill partially with sand. I would run it with a viaaqua 1800 (cheap and I have used their products before... nice nice nice) in the tank.

It would give me a FBF and a pump to run it for only 60 dollars.

I might still go DIY, but this appealed to me.

i dont know if it will work but try ebay for better prices on those, i remember them being cheap on there

I found a fluidized bed filter on ebay (thanks!) for cheap (with a nice high shipping rate)...

It sounds a little too good to be true, and I would probably not use their media. Just because the [poorly translated] description of it says that the media absorbs stuff... I have sand though, so that is not an issue.

Should I try it?

That filter would be cheaper than the parts that I would need to make the DIY one.

Vendors from Hong Kong are pretty honest and the guy has pretty good feedback. For the price, you can't lose. It might be designed around that media, so don't discard it (incase it won't work with sand).

Well I was going to try it with the media first, but I was not going to rely on it. I was actually thinking of pouring that into a pitcher and trying with my own sand... I could always swap it out again.

I think I will ask for the credit card today...

There are a bunch of stuff that he has for sale cheaper than anywhere in the US, but they are all 220-240v! This is the only thing he sells that is not powered.
