will this work

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the general rule is 50-55 gallons per oscar at a minimum, so you should be ok. Just make sure you have good a good filtration system - they're messy!

as long as theres no agression, as soon as one gets *****y your gunna have problems. but O comm tanks are great! +1 on the extra filtration!

thnks i was thinking of going with a smaller tank for a sump and a pond filter in the tank itself how big of a tank for the sump would u all recommend i currently have a 15,30,20,96.10,5,15 available??

Should be fine. I know someone with 6 in a 150. They are between 12 and 13 inches. Not that I would reccomend that, but it should work fine for you.

The 96 would be great, but then you lose a big tank, but really the others would just be too small for a 400 soooooooo go with the 96. :)

I tried to use a 6' round 300 gal Rubbermaid stock tank as an "Oscar Pond" two different times and both times it ended up an aggressive mess...

Both times I moved 6 Juvis of the same size in, both times as the fish became sexually mature they began fighting like mad. The first time I ended up only being able to keep a pair in it... the second time I ended up with one 13" sterile female that rotated spawning between two 12" males. Anytime the males fought she would immediately dominante the fight.

The two ways I've seen an Oscar community work are...

A) In a MASSIVE (1,000 gal +) tank stocked with multiple Cichlids that are considerably tougher than the Oscars. This pushes them to band together to protect themselves from the others. Although from what I understand this did not work out well for the Oscars long term.

B) In an overstocked format in a nearly bare tank. This way the Oscars do not claim territory and have less motive to fight. In this situation if a pair should form I would expect trouble for all of the rest.

I love Oscars to death and have always wanted a huge Oscar community... but they simply are not community fish and as adults don't do well in groups...
