I work for finning and we constantly get giant CAT parts sent to us in heavily reinforced plywood crates. Today I noticed some large hose came in a large 5 by 5 foot crate. Its about 28 inches high. And uses three quarter inch plwood. The hose weighed 2300 lbs. These crates also are used for parts as large as 6000lbs. (heaviest weight i could find on any part shipped in this particular crate) It is also on skids.

Will this work if i use some pond sealant on the interior? It will only be for 3 rays. Should i keep the skids? I was thinking of keeping the skid and spray insulating in between them. Or should i lose the skids and put it on some sort of insulated mat. They also have lids that I could work with in some way. It seems very very sturdy. I tried pulling on the middle of the sidewall and it had practically zero flex. Any advice would be great!

This will be a build thread by the weekend so I would love so help as I have never done this. The hardest part to me seemed like it would be building the box. But now I hope this will work and thats out of the way.

The best crate that i could find that will fit down my basement stairs is 54 inches square. Its only 19 inches tall so I would like to raise it 6-8 inches more. Can this be done? I was thinking of getting the top cut into 7 inch strips. Than gluing the strips to the top. I will also run a brace from the center of each side to the top of the added height. Will this be structually sound?

I purchased another fx5 today. I am going to use that one with one I already have. I will also add some air and a sponge filter or two. Im curioius will the fx5s work if they are only 6 inches below the pond? Am I going to need to raise the pond? HAhah seems like alot of work still. Any advice would help. I will post pics when the crate is at home tom.,

Im worried the folding and the pleating will be a nightmare. But u make it sound easier than my plan. Maybe thats the way to go. Arrrgh i just wanna make my rays happier!

its actually quite easy!!! dont worry man. in my pond it was hard though cause i had 4 steps! but yours should be really easy just make sure you smooth out the inside nicely and when you add the h2o it will help also. very very simple

Okay you have made me change my mind. I am going to try the liner route. How thick of a liner will i need? Just the standard? Or is there thicker applications?
I just would like to see the rays cruising in a larger footprint. And not having to fllee my aros bullying when he is grumpy.

I am bringing the crate home on friday or saturday and i hope to install the liner on the weekend. HA maybe wishful thinking but i would like to see them in it this weekend.

I just bought a 200 gallon stock tank. Picked it up for 160 bucks. Its dimensions are 60 plus inches by 36 by 23 high. something along those lines. I got it from a local horse store. Going to be a basement pond. Im going to raise it up with cinderblocks and one inch piece of plywood. Im using a fx5 and two large sponge filters. i am also adding twow bubble discs. Since the tank is only 23 inches tall i will have to modifly the intake of fx5. i also want to add sand this time so I can see the rays. Thinking of hanging some shop lights above with some plant friendly bulbs. Maybe some lily pads or something like that. Any tips on keeping sand out of the fx5? I t will have to hang a lil low. I also want to make a 33 gallon sump out of a spare tank. it will be my first sump and i really just want it for bio and for heaters. Any simple tips there will help.

Keeping sand out of the X5 may be hard to do, maybe just put sand in 2/3 of the tank and leave it bare by the intake.

Why not just use a bigger sump and ditch the canister?

I am thinking of that but have no real experience with sumps. Its in the future for me as is a drip in drip out system.

I just hauled water to the basement and filled it up. It is stamped with a 240gallon stamp. Not sure if I got a lil bit of a deal here. I already think it looks awesome. I really want to add plants on top. Im going with some lilypads or something along those lines. ANy ideas for plants? I am hanging a 400w hps above the pond just because its laying around. This should give me enough PAR to grow some nice plants. I figure im dedicating 1350 watts to this pond for lights, heaters and filters.

I used some heavy duty pallets as a stand. (Its totally ghetto) I stacked two piles of 3x3 heavyduty pallets, 3 pallets high. Just to get the pond off the ground a little. And to keep my dogs from trying to jump in. Im a lil worried my pittie may make the plunge. I gave her a stern talking to about it already. I will post some pics as soon as my wifey takes em! This also puts me in the 500 gallons of water in my house group! My wife hasnt even made fun of my pond once. All she said is " Its huge"
