I am getting ready to stock my 240. I plan on doing a planted discus tank. The question I have is will this work for the substrate. Quickcrete pool filter sand from lowes? I also plan using fluorite tablets next to the plants. So would that work or not? Thanks in advance.

I know the PFS will work but will let someone else to chime in about the flourite tablets.

Thanks for the response. That’s should have been floirish tabs or some kind of root tabs. Spell check got the best of me. The sand brand is the one I was really wondering about. That’s what I can find around here.

When discus are growing don't use a substrate, please. With the amount of waste youngsters can produce you can have some serious nitrate and bacterial problems if you don't keep the bottoms clean, it can lead to stunted and sick discus. As adults they are more forgiving.

Flourish root tabs will work, depends on what you'd like to plant though.

They will not be going into the 240 for a while. Thanks for the information. I am just getting started on the restocking of the 240 and making sure I have everything right. What do you think about the quickcrete brand pool filter sand?

That sand is quite dirty, but easily cleaned. Stick hose in bottom of bucket, fill with sand, turn on hose, go do something else for awhile, get lost in your train of thought, blah blah blah. Come back and pull the hose out, dump the excess water off the top and wala clean sand. That sand is a little bigger grain which makes vacuuming easier.

Pool filter sand is good stuff. I'd say go for it.
Personally I like this "estes stoney river aquarium sand" I have used in my last few tanks. Similar to PFS but slightly larger grain. A bit less cost effective though.
Flourish tabs are decent, I used them for a while in my planted tank. Switched to just dosing the liquid stuff though as I found it easier and don't have particularly demanding plants.
