Will tiny gravel keep waste on top similar to sand?

I'm looking at Caribsea torpedo beach, mostly because:

1) I have an FX5, so...

2) Sand always finds its way into the filter because...

3) I keep bigger aggressive fish. And...

4) You can still keep live plants in the small grain size.

I was just wondering if the smaller gravels keep waste from falling down into them. Any thoughts?

Yeah, the waste should stay on top.

I think it does keep the food from getting trapped better than regular gravel. As well as fine sand? Maybe not quite, but the advantage is that it is easy to vacuum without sucking up all your sand. I was originally going to mix it with Sunset Gold (I might still in the future), but that kind of does away with the advantages of the larger grain size.

I have 120 pounds of sunset gold and I just want it out. I'm not risking the life of my fx5 because Pbass are my passion. I really can't see the size food I give them slipping in the torpedo beach.

he means a kind of mesh at the filter intake small enough that sand or whatever substrate cannot be sucked up by the filter
