When I added my 4 inch Ebjd to my tank a few months back my normal jd and him/ her immediately started lip locking. I sepparated them and now I know the normal jd is a female but I'm still not sure about the Ebjd. Will jd/Ebjd of the same sex lip lock to claim territory/kill/chase off each other?

Yea that's good. I separated them cuz the female jd was winning lol. At the time I was unsure about both of their sexes. After the fight the Ebjd got an infection in the sores where they were lip locking but overcame it then later on got callamanus worms and beat that. I really want to breed him since he's pretty tough. It was just weird cuz literally the instant I put them together it started happening

Lip Locking is common, widespread Cichlid behavior - this is part of how they form their hierarchies. Both sexes do it. It's normal.

fwprawn has it right. Fights can last a long time too.

My male severums lip lock all the time to try and establish their dominance over one another. Sometimes it goes on for 15 - 20 minutes and it usually ends with both fish retreating to a corner and acting stressed out for a while.

Lip-locking is not always indicative of spawning behavior -- sometimes it's just territorial/dominance behavior.

Agree they all do it, and it is standard pre-spawning and dominance behavior between both sexes or same sex. In the cenotes in Mexico where JDs are from, a very large percentage of adults have obvious damage and fungus on their mouths from sparring.
