I have been contemplating purchasing a python waterchanger, because hauling buckets for 3 tanks from 55-90 gallons is getting quite old.

During waterchanges now, I only shut filters off if the water level is going to drop below the level of the intake of the filter. This is because I treat the water in buckets with Prime before adding them to the tank to remove chemicals like chlorine/chloramine. However, since I would be treating the water after its introduction to the tank when using a python, would I have to turn filters off regardless to prevent untreated water from killing off the BB colonies in my filters? Will it affect them at all?

NOTE: I have not contacted my water company to find out if they use chloramine in treatments, so to be safe, lets assume they do. If that even matters.

Good question. Im sick of using buckets as well. Will like to see the responses here.

wouldn't hurt to turn off all the filters.... treat the tanks w/ prime before the new water goes in this should help..

Add enough Prime to treat the whole tank, then fill. You won't have any problems.

Thought about this as well. The only reason I am trying to stay away from turning my filters off is because I run an eheim 2217 and in the past turning it off and on during waterchanges is a pain lol.

You're overthinking it. Just add dechlor prior to re-filling (or during).

Are lots of folks using buckets for refilling tanks (instead of Pythons or hoses) because of this fear?

Matt

I tend to over think things often. I don't use buckets for that reason alone, just been too cheap so far to shell out the money for a python
