Will UV sterilizers kill diatoms?

I have a constant diatom problem in all of my tanks and i'm looking for a solution for getting rid of them.All my tanks are well established for over a year.So i must have silicates or something in my tap water right?So i have read that uv sterilizers kill algae so i thought maybe it would get rid of diatoms.

That sounds logical because diatoms technically are algae ...

UVs work for free floating algae but dont do a whole heck of a lot for surface algae...
