I have heard that most victorian haps are similar in behavior to mbuna, so I was wondering if they'd form a colony in a tank with enough space/hiding spaces? Colony as in I just leave them alone and they form a population based on their fry maturing in the tank.
or will I need to pull fry to have any success in breeding?

(also this happens to be my 1000th message on here so that's pretty cool)

I have not found it to be true that mbuna or any Lake Malawi will allow fry to mature in the tank. IME the fry are eaten by the adults as soon as they are spit. IME survivor fry are rare.

I have had the same experience with Victorians. 1m:4f for the peaceful ones and pull the holding female at 18 days into a separate tank if you want to raise fry. Remove the female 1-2 days after she spits.

My dad currently has a colony of around 30 demasoni going that started from 3 individuals, and I have a few friends with colonies of saulosi, yellow labs, cynos, and metriaclima sp, so I assumed most mbuna formed colonies. However I will probably end up pulling females to raise fry while they're small and don't have many eggs.
