I have a female Maingano who is holding for the second time since I got her (in February). The first time, she wouldn't let me catch her, and all of her fry except one got eaten by the other fish. I've been trying for at least a week to catch her and put her in her own tank so that her second brood won't end up like the first. However, she's in a 75 gallon tank with 18 other 2" - 3.5" cichlids, a ton of rocks stacked into cave-like structures (and siliconed together), and various caves dug out from under the rocks by the fish.

We made a large barrier net that goes across the tank so that we can confine her to a smaller area and hopefully have better luck catching her (this has worked with other cichlids) but she's a wily one. She always finds the teeniest gap to get through, or she just jumps over the net. Trying to catch her when she's sleeping doesn't work, since her night vision is better than ours. We've tried red nets, clear containers, our hands... no matter how/when we try to catch her, she outsmarts us. I swear she can read minds! Does anyone have any ideas on how to catch my super-smart, mind-reading fish? I'd very much appreciate suggestions!

hmmm......best bet is to just vacuum out the fry or put up a divider so the others cannot get to the fry.As for catching her you need to try 2 nets and put flake in so she will come up to eat hopefully and move fast on her with a surprise attack :WHOA:Oh-the 2 nets is for trickery-come at her straight on so she turns around and swims right into the other net

Agree about the flake...I go on my normal business, with the net hidden in reach...feed and snap them up. When all else fails, make a fish trap out of a two liter bottle.

If the opening is too small just cut the top off to size. I put one in a rock cave, and when my firemouth ran in there to hide he was trapped :).

That's how I catch killies for fishing.

Thats what I needed to do for a few of my fish.

Yeah, the two (or more...) nets thing never works with her. She just darts right around them. Anyway, we did manage to catch her last night. That operation took 3 hours, draining 50% of the water, the removal of at least half of the rocks in the tank, two giant nets to block off large areas of the tank until we had her in about 10 gallons on the end with nowhere to hide, and some fancy net work. Heh. We finally got her, though! Her pretty little Maingano fry will survive this time! :)

hahahaha don't blame the nets ;).

and i doubt shes a superfish. just play a bit more reflex-required video games and build up your own speed.
