neither. Catoprion mento is a cousin of both.

VERY COOL!!!! Just contacted Joedy at TX Fish wildlife, and he said this particular species is not on the prohibited species list; therfore not illegal. Does anyone know where to purchase??????????Thanks

I think you may want to get a second opinion. TX lists all species of Subfamily; Serrasalminae. This is the same classification as for Catoprion mento. Here's the law as listed in TX's list:

Piranhas and Pirambebas, Family Serrasalmidae, Subfamily Serrasalminae - All species

Just had a long phone conversation who is listed as the person to contact regarding the issues of invasive species here in texas... He aplogized to me and corrected himself saying that they were legal. So who else should I get a second opinion from???????

F&G website, DNR, etc. Or, believe that guy and try getting them in. Anyone who can read the list will not be willing to risk charges by shipping these fish to TX.

BTW, this site has all the available restricted species lists, listed by state, in the sticky section of the Buy/Sell forum. Check it out yourself.
