Why do people ship in the winter when things are more likely to go wrong? Given the snow, increased travel complexity from xmas, and low temps why would you risk it? Cant wait?

I had a few Odoes shipped during winter a few years ago strictly because of availability. I couldn't find them any other time! Now it seems they're everywhere but that's my excuse.

you can ship in the winter, but you have to do it properly.

newspaper. styro.

water bottles filled with hot water packed into the boxes etc. these make great heat packs.

the main issue in winter is the handling at the airport. you can pack the fish perfectly, but if they are left on the runway for a few hours in minus degree weather, well, there is only so much you can do..

It's hard to run a fish store without fish lol....and winter is actually the busy season, something about people sitting around indoors and spending more time looking at their tanks...ironically the most frozen fish I've ever received came in August, apparently the Haitian shipping guys decided as it was so hot, they should put a football sized block of ice in the middle of the box...suffice to say mostly everything was ice cold upon arrival.

I've been tempted to place an order or two in the dead of winter but the factors that were listed by the OP were enough to convince me to wait a few months. The good vendors that I've dealt with here have told me though, that they can handle winter shipping.

Shipping in winter scares me if It's not within driving distance I'm not likely to do it unless it's something that I know I won't again any time soon. but still it's not something I'm willing to do for any fish that I would want.

Luckily I have'nt been too tempted during the colder months and the must haves or the just gotta haves were available at better times of the year.

With a good quality styro and heat packs its very easily done.Ive had fish shipped to me in single digit temps and shipped out fish and had no problems.and as simonl pointed out, heating methods are more reliable than cooling.Im less likely to ship fish in july and august than december.
The styros I prefer to use come from drs offices and are used to ship refrigerated medications.almost 2" thick walls and hold temp very well.Cost a little more to ship fish that way but IMO worth it.
