I've been looking to get a few other gars threw my local LFS.. and all he has are floridas and alligators. My friend called me tonight as he was fishing w/ his family, and they caught a gar. he knows I have been growling about not being able to find anyothers available threw the stores here. Does anyone know about any regs on catching one myself to put in my tank? I know they are considered a "rough" fish around here. I'm aware we have long noses and short noses? in the waters around here. I know game fish are not suppose to be even brought home unless killed before transport, but I am curiouse if "rough" fish are viewed in the same manner? I haven't found any cut and paste yes or nos? It probably wouldn't be until next year that I'de attempt to catch one if it is legal, because I don't have the extra room ect for a QT tank atm. wasteing disease being my biggest concern and the fish would be QT'd for a few weeks if not monthes just to make sure before introduceing it w/ my other fish.

I didn't see any regs on Lepisostidae for Wisconsin. They're not on the invasives list nor the Prohibited/Restricted species lists. That would mean that sportfishing rules apply (size limit, bag limit, etc.). You need to check the fishing laws to see if any or all retained (not catch-n-release) fish must be killed in order to transport them.

Thanks Oddball, hence asking the Question =/ via WI fishing regs for 2010 they are listed as rough fish. I'll have to snag another reg book when I stop at the bait shop tomorrow, and see the fine print on the retained fish info. May have to just stop in at DNR and find out. I've made calls in reference to other things, and either got the wrong person or just ignored/jerked around. Which is why I was hoping someone here would know. Time to get out the waders, and dig deeper!
