i moved my tank from the floor up onto a stand i built ( it was sitting on 2x4's cause i had no where to put it when i moved) and i some how turned my heater waaaaaay up and pretty much cooked my fish ( went up to 87)i woke up and my bala and tinfoils were just floating upside down and twitching..... :( and my lobster was upside down curle up like a spider.. dead.... but! i slowly added cold water and a few ice cubes and got them down to 80 and everyone lived cept my lobster and a fully grown tetra ( not sure but he was 2 inches and had red fins with a black stripe down his side) now my fish are happy again..... yet i still feel like they plot their revenge on my ignorance

they were all gulpling air, was this an attempt to cool down?

no, they were trying to breath, the warmer the water is the less dissolved oxygen their is, at 87F their IS VERY LITTLE OXYGEN AVAILABLE especially when their is not enough aeration (from a air pump or powerhead)

now people think fish gulp or gasp for air at the surface to breath, (most) fish CANNOT BREATH AIR, they gasp at the surface because thats were their is the most oxygen, the first few milimeters , its a despereate attempt for them to breath  .

Need O2, try running an extra air stone in there for a couple of days to get the baseline dissolved O2 levels back up. It will return to nomal any wat but how fast depends on your set up and surface movement. Fish will survive higher temps than you might think if the water has a good surfoce flow.

they were grasping for air as the higher the temp the lower the o2 level in water.
