I would say the birchirs would have to be no less then 6 inches larger then the jar for this to work... and eventually the jar is just going to out grow it. Would best bet if you want to have a jar in a com is with very large robust fish like large pacu or big catfish.... read the jardini tank mates sticky... keeping jars in community's only happen few and far between... not to discourage you because I myself am trying to keep a jar in a com but I just think you are picking a no go situation here IMO
 
I have never had birchers myself so I am only speculating., but seems you could go with some large cichlids. With cichlids though it is best to stay away from breeding pairs. You may want to repost this question in either the bircher forum or the SA/CA Cichlid forum.
 
in my case, I'm not leaving my jardini or asians with bichirs ever again when they're small. 5" delhizi some how turned my 4" fish into dinner. go figure.
