Hello,
Ex Lurker With a question,
Recently Purchsed A Mala or wolf fish and Placed him in A 75 gallon Tank Which housed my 2 oscars prior to moving them to my pond. The wolf Had a small injury to the mouth before purchased from scraping with the pet shop tank mates. Seems He likes to try and jump out and i noticed another injury to the top of his mouth this morning from trying to jump out. he now has 2 injurys one to the top and one to the bottom of his mouth. What can i do to keep him from further injury.
using a aquaclear 70 and a magnum 350 deluxe for filtration and 1 airstone to oxygenate the water. bare bottom tank to pick up uneaten foods right away.ammonia and nitrites read at 0 ppm. my normal maintenance procedure with all tanks is a 35/40% water change once a week. Hoplias mala is my first of the species and would like it to be a successful endevour. unfortunatley on the internet at least i have not found any in depth care information and faqs on the species aside from the very basic immediate needs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
rai

I would add some decor. Just to give it some hiding spots. That might help.

hey thanks for the quick answer there are a few plastic aquarium plants in there. i have slate stones in the yard purchased for my outdoor pond i havent used. after rinsing and heating in an oven should i build him a cave? or maybe make a hiding cave our of pvc pipe?
would this be the only reason he might do this?
thanks again

i did the same thing and made caves out of slates. my wolves love the cave and spend most of its day in the cave except during feeding time. the only real issue i had was that i personally didnt like the way the cave look, but other than that it works great ;]

o and also my wolves did the same thing and tried to jump for a coup of days after i got it. i really don't know why they do this, probably stressed due to the change, but just put a cover on and it'll stop once its comfortable. also don't freak out if your wolf doesn't eat for a coup of weeks, my wolves didn't accept food for two and a half week.

yes im actually drying out the slates now in the oven but thats exactly what ill do. hope he settles down after a few days.
tvbbnumber41: Yes that was my next question how long before he eats lol. i throw a piece of shrimp in to see if he'll take it but has'nt shown interest. I figured because of the mouth injury.hopefully by the end of 2 weeks he will be settled and comfy.
i added a little salt in the tank .50 or 1/2 teaspon per gallon would this help ease his gill and coat function and help him settle in or should i have not added that due to the injury?
thank you all,
i really needed this advice and help.

there natural jumpers at my lfs one jumped to the tank next to it and ate all the fish that were in it ,when that killer gets hungry he will eat watch your fingers just throw the food to him

lol. teh bucktooth tetras at my lfs did the same thing. they hopped and ate ALL of the neon tetras in it. a zebra danio also jumped from his tank and (to his demise) landed in the pirhanna tank
