Larger Hoplias are known to do this. Not sure about erythrinus sp.

Every species of wolves I kept did it including hoplias, hoplerythrinus, and erythrinus

Do they gulp air like gars?

I had a common wolf that did. I was told they can survive out of water until they dry out. Not sure how true that is but I had one that jumped out of my tank and he had to be out for couple hours.
